Health and Fitness: Things to Eat and Drink When you Have the Flu

Catching the flu is a real pain. To be honest with you, there is no food or drink that can cure the flu or make the symptoms go away. The only way is to take medications or just rest. While you're healing, you must stay hydrated and be eating the right things, so your sickness doesn't worsen. The foods that I will be talking about might be able to help you ease your discomfort or even get you back on your feet faster.

For example, sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade is actually better than water because they can help replenish sodium, potassium, and other fluids while removing some of the toxins in your body. Coconut water is also another great option. My mother would always buy me coconut water when I have the flu so I can assure you that it is going to alleviate the sickness.

If you don't really want to drink sugary drinks, a cup of hot, pleasant-smelling tea is also a great thing to drink when you have the flu because according to Rena Zelig, assistant professor of nutritional sciences at Rutgers University, “The flu usually involves upper respiratory symptoms, and drinking warm or hot liquids can help open airways.”

You can get a great deal from just a can of chicken noodle soup. The soup itself provides lost sodium from your body because it's salty, while the chicken provides protein. The vegetables in the soup provide vitamins and minerals. However, eating bright coloured vegetables and fruits is a different story. They provide antioxidants, which are vitamins C and E. Well, what do antioxidants do? They remove the deterioration of stored food products. A great antioxidant is an orange because it contributes a whole lot of vitamin C. If you like liquids better, that's fine too, because orange juice works just as effective as an orange.

Zinc a metal that we find in batteries; but did you know that zinc is also good for you when you're sick? "Studies show that the mineral helps fight infection by regulating the immune system and that taking zinc supplements may reduce the duration of the common cold," according to TIME. Eating beef can deliver a rich amount of zinc and a great abundance of vitamin B and protein. If you're not really a meat person, try eating shrimps, because it contains a lot of zinc as well.

I hope you'll never have to use these tips. But if you do catch the flu, just follow my instructions and you will bounce back in no time!
